Highlighted ArticlesOMEP brings two Department of Labor grants to Provide Lean training to successful conclusionAs OMEP's $3 Million award winning Department of Labor Advanced Manufacturing Training in Lean Manufacturing and the $3.2 Million Lean Manufacturing Training for Food Processors grants draw to a close in the first quarter of 2008, actual performance greatly exceeded expected grant outcomes in every category. Together the grants have touched more than 150 companies and provided training to almost 7,000 employees.
From 2004 through 2007, the Advanced Manufacturing Training grant provided Lean Manufacturing training to employees of the Northwest High Performance Enterprise Consortium (NWHPEC). Providing a "Lean boost" to NWHPEC member manufacturers, the project helped to increase NWHPEC consortium membership as well as the global competitiveness of the region. Serving more than 100 companies, the grant provided training for 3,784 employees. Outcomes included the creation of 381 new jobs, independently verified business outcomes including increased/retained sales of $97,050,000, and more than $3 million each in both cost savings and capital investment. Read More» The Lean Manufacturing Training for Food Processors grant delivered an innovative combination of lean manufacturing technical training coupled with targeted English language training for the Limited English Proficient workforce and cultural training for the entire workforce -all to aid the processors in becoming more competitive in the global marketplace. From 2005 through the first quarter of 2008, 54 companies in four states trained over 3200 employees. In Oregon more than 18 companies have participated and over 1100 employees have been trained. Aggregate financial impacts for Oregon food processors to date show at least $6.2 million in increased/retained sales, and more than $5 million in cost savings and capital investment. 470 Oregon food processing employees saw wage gains and 124 promotions and 45 new jobs have been documented.
