September 28, 2015 by Jasmine Agnor

In three days the world will celebrate National Manufacturing Day. October 2, 2015 promises to be the largest manufacturing day ever, by a wide margin! What started as a simple salute to manufacturers two years ago has become one of the most influential international events of the year. Across the nation over 2,000 manufacturers will open their doors to students and introduce them to exciting new career options. This understanding of manufacturing careers couldn’t be more crucial. Studies show that those familiar with manufacturing are two times as likely to encourage a child to pursue manufacturing. If we are to fill the skills gap we must continue on this trajectory.

Oregon’s events have doubled since 2014, with over 1,200 students participating in the Portland metro area alone. We have connected with the Columbia Willamette Workforce Collaborative, the Tri-County School-to-Work Consortium and Industry to coordinate events for 2015. Thanks to all of our industry sponsors who are supporting this event! This year more than 75 companies in Oregon and SW Washington will be highlighting the wide variety of manufacturing careers.

Recently I had the pleasure of attending a NIST Quarterly conference where I heard Carroll Thomas, Director of the Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), discuss opportunities in manufacturing.

“We are changing the way the world defines manufacturing, right now. This is our chance to redefine American manufacturing and usher in a new manufacturing renaissance.”

Whether you are a student looking for a career, a professional, or an Oregonian with your own manufacturing story, there are several free MFG Day events to check out. Find all the details at OregonMfgday.com!
